Visits to the experimental fields of the QualitàInBio project

On June 3rd and 6th, the experimental fields of the Innovation project QualitàInBio will be shown to all interested people.

Monday, June 3rd the event will be held at Azienda Agricola Cà del Bosco (Ravenna, RA) while on Thursday, 6th June the visit will take place at Azienda Agraria Sperimentale Stuard (Parma, PR).

The aim of the project is to improve the technological quality of durum and bread wheat varieties cultivated in plains under organic farming to meet the requirements of the secondary processing industry. The objective is set in a context of a progressive shift from conventional farming to organic and an extension of the organic cropping areas from the mountain/hill to the plains; to enhance cereal biodiversity by identifying effective selling propositions based on their nutritional and health value.

Open Fields sponsor of “Parma Territorio d’Acque”, a cultural project in the framework of Parma Italy’s Capital of Culture 2020

The “Parma Territorio d’Acque” project, writted by ArcheoVea Impresa Culturale and by Azienda Agraria Sperimentale Stuard and approved with DD-2019-1133 of 30/04/2019, will be included in the schedule of PARMA ITALY’S CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2020 events, with the aim to create a tourist and cultural infrastructure dedicated to the theme of water, in order to sensitize towards the issues of preserving and optimizing water resources, to promote scholastic dissemination and to promote the Parma agrifood value chains.

The partnership and development of the project allow to bring together public and private institutions linked by the interest in the valorization of water, starting from Azienda Agraria Sperimentale Stuard, a rediscovery and preservation centre of local food culture, as well as an experimental, technical and scientific laboratory, working in the agricultural field for the promotion of local value chains.

The events will take place from the iconic place of the project, the Vasca Votiva di Noceto (PR), whose museum will open in autumn 2019. From this ancient place dating back to the Bronze Age, three cultural paths will depart, which will promote the organization of many events, such as guided tours, technical irrigation demonstrations and tasting experiences of historical local food products.

  • Path one: water and cults. Places involved: Museo della Vasca Votiva, Fontanili, Acque “salse” di Salsomaggiore, Ponte romano di Parma.
  • Path two: water, typical food products and innovation.Places involved: Azienda Agraria Sperimentale Stuard, Museo della Vasca Votiva, Mulini per la produzione di farina, Museo del Parmigiano Reggiano di Soragna, Abbazia di Fontevivo.
  • Path three: water, galleries, aqueducts, and medieval canals. Places involved: Alcuni dei luoghi coinvolti: Museo della Vasca Votiva, Gallerie Filtranti di Marano, Impianti, canali, chiuse e pozzi del Consorzio di Bonifica Parmense

Moreover, the cooperation between the partners will allow the opening of other places full of charm which will be announced in the incoming months.

The offer in the field of teaching is very wide, thanks to the collaboration of the University of Parma (DUSIC department), the participation of local educational organization and institutions.

The events will be promoted by ExploringParma website and by the publication of two informative articles.

Ranieri at Omsk for a siberian-quality durum wheat value chain development

In February, 2019 Ranieri participated as invited speaker at an important Conference held at Omsk, Russia, where He brought his experience in the development of quality durum wheat value chains.
The conference was a great opportunity to discuss the strategies for a quality durum wheat value chain development in Siberia.

Final workshop SOiLUTION

The final workshop of the EIP-AGRI project “Solutions to reduce soil erosion in hilly and mountain areas maintaining and enhancing agricultural activities – SOiLUTION”, was held in Piacenza 12 October 2018.

The SOiLUTION project aimed to reduce soil erosion in hilly and mountain areas through the introduction of conservation agriculture technique based on improved crop rotation, use of cover crops and minimum tillage systems.

During the workshop the partners explained the activities carried out within the project and Francesca Staffilani and Giampaolo Sarno from “Regione Emilia Romagna” illustrated the regional measures to reduce soil erosion.

From Seed to Pasta III – A Sustainable Durum Wheat Chain For Food Security And Healthy Lives

Following the two previous editions of the international conference “From Seed to Pasta”, this third edition (FSTP3, Bologna, 19 -21 September 2018) is timely in view of the remarkable progress in durum wheat science and the increasing concern on the future availability of durum grain due to climate change, a matter with fundamental socio-economic implications in the Mediterranean countries where durum-derived products are a staple.

The interdisciplinary nature of the FSTP3 congress will provide a unique opportunity to learn and debate the latest achievements in durum wheat production and processing and to assess the impact of the durum-value chain on the environment and our health.

Roberto Ranieri, as moderator of the round table on the “Innovation in the durum wheat-pasta chain” (Session 7), will introduce the discussion with a “Short summary on the innovations of pasta value chain in the last 50 years”.

Lactic Acid Fermentation as Means of Nutritional Improvement. Marco Spaggiari at ICWL18

Open Fields cooperates with the Department of Food and Drug of the University of Parma in a PhD project which aims to characterize the co-products deriving from the first processing industry of wheat, maize and rice to meet the needs of the cereal industry to increase sustainability and competitiveness of the agro-food chain.

Wheats&Women International conference and the Carlotta award 2018

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Carlotta Strampelli, countess Parisani (1868-1926), wife and inspiring collaborator of Nazareno Strampelli, the Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze and the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) have organized the Wheats & Women International Conference, which was held in Rome last June 14th and 15th 2018.
The Wheats & Women International Conference has been the ideal framework for the delivery of the first edition of the Carlotta Award, to honor achievements of women scientists in the field of wheat genetics and breeding.

The Conference has offered the opportunity to present and share the latest research experiences, new approaches and technologies in wheats research;to highlight “what” the sustainable wheat production problems are and “how” they can be solved; to celebrate the achievements of women working on wheat and related species.
Wheat varieties are going to face increasing challenges, including climate changes, production must be economically and ecologically sustainable, harvest must be safe and possess nutritional and technological qualities. Women are deeply engaged in this endeavor.

The Carlotta Award was awarded to Ksenia Krasileva, a young researcher at Norwich Research Park (UK) who distinguished herself for her scientific work “Wheat genomics and immunity“. A special mention was given to Anna Maria Mastrangelo, Italian researcher of Crea and to Julie King of the University of Nottingham. For the prize, 27 applications were submitted from 11 different countries and 3 continents.

Open Fields with Roberto Ranieri participated to the conference with a presentation on the “Market-Based Value Chains and Farming Technologies“, within the “Agriculture and 2030 Agenda (the future of farming)” session; aim of the presentation is to imagine what the future of the agro-food supply chains could be, starting from the present trends. The report was much appreciated by the audience, inspired questions and gave rise to a constructive exchange of opinions.
