AMIGRANO

Development of New Resistant-Starch Durum Wheat Varieties for a High Nutritional Value Supply Chain – AMIGRANO

AMIGRANO is a project led by CGS Sementi, in collaboration with the partners Open Fields, Value Groovers, and the Department of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences (DAFNE) of the University of Tuscia.

The project aims to develop new advanced lines of durum wheat with a high amylose content, enabling the establishment of the first European supply chain specialised in products with high nutritional value. Resistant starch, a key component of these varieties, is less digestible and promotes health benefits, including improved glycemic control and a positive impact on the gut microbiota. In pasta, a high resistant starch content also enhances texture and cooking performance.

Project activities are structured into three specific actions:

i) crossing and genetic selection;

ii) molecular and biochemical analyses; and

iii) evaluation of semolina quality through processing trials.

These are complemented by cross-cutting actions such as: iv) cooperation among partners; v) dissemination; and vi) market studies and business model development.

The approach integrates conventional breeding techniques with the use of molecular markers, supported by biochemical analyses to validate the “resistant starch” trait. These molecular approaches, combined with the use of growth chambers, enable the acceleration of breeding phases and reduce the time required for varietal release.
