Fork-to-farm agent-based simulation tool augmenting BIOdiversity in the agri-food VALUE chain
![]()
BioValue is a European project funded by Horizon 2020 involving 17 international partners with the aim of enhancing agricultural and food biodiversity in Europe. The project takes a holistic and participatory approach to analyse the relationships between biodiversity, the agri-food value chain, the environment, health and consumer preferences. Through an agent-based simulation model, BioValue studies the interactions between supply chain actors in different climate and water scenarios, in order to foster the spread of underutilised and genetically diversified crops. The project integrates participatory breeding activities, novel food development and the implementation of certification and traceability systems, with the aim of promoting a transition to more resilient and sustainable agroecosystems and stimulating a positive change in the eating habits of European consumers.
Within the project, Open Fields collaborates as a service provider with the Department of Agri-Food Sciences and Technologies of the University of Bologna for Work Package 9, which is dedicated to product labeling and traceability, with a focus on the Italian lentil supply chain.
The main activities concern:
- the analysis of the supply chain, economic flows and coordination mechanisms between producers, processors and distributors;
- mapping existing sustainability and biodiversity brands and evaluating the potential for a new dedicated label;
- the description and optimisation of field-to-consumer traceability systems;
- the design of an innovative traceability model based on biodiversity and DNA barcoding techniques;
- the commercial evaluation of new processed products with high added value.
The activities were carried out through data collection and analysis, workshops and interviews with the characters of the supply chain.
