IRRI-MIA

Advanced IoT Sensors for an Irrigation 4.0 and a smart Measure of Environmental Sustainability

The IRRI-MIA project has as its primary objective the evolution of IRRIFRAME (www.irriframe.it), the consolidated Decision Support System (DSS) owned by ANBI and developed by CER, that is provided to farmers to optmise irrigation programming and fertigation, based on a soil-plant-atmosphere water balance model.

The innovation introduced by IRRI-MIA consists in integrating water consumption data from innovative sensors installed directly in the field into this model. This hybrid approach, which creates a dynamic interaction between the data measured in vivo and the model, allows us to overcome the limitations related to empirical estimates.

The aim is twofold: on the one hand, to personalise the irrigation council by connecting it to the real conditions of the crop; on the other, to simplify the interaction between the farmer and the system. The trials, conducted in collaboration with important production companies in Emilia-Romagna, include pear and strategic crops such as vines, industrial tomatoes, potatoes and sugar beet.

The experimentation is based on sensors “in vivo”, which in direct contact with the plant allows its state of health to be interpreted in real time.

The sensors used are: TreeTalker®Cyber (https://www.openfields.it/treetalker/), Wine Talker, Crop Talker, Bioristor.

The system developed for five main supply chains (pear, vine, sugar beet, potato, tomato) is designed to be extended to other supply chains.
